Can a leopard change its shorts?

Not in a reasonable amount of time, it seems.

Holy shit, the OS X 10.5 (aka Leopard) install takes almost an hour and a half!?

WTF?!

Just for kicks, I ran the upgrade when I got the disc, and that took a whole twenty minutes to go from a patched to current 10.4.x. A clean install is always for the better, so I booted off the DVD, formatted the drive (Journaled, Case Sensitive.), and let it start.

At least Xcode is on the DVD. Grabbing a ~1GB ISO from Apple's website is not remotely my idea of fun.

And I thought Vista took forever to install.

Hmm?

A clean install on my old machine (a two-ish year old iBook) took maybe an hour, and an archive and install on my main machine (rev. A Macbook Pro) took about 45 minutes.

I think the majority of the time is spent "checking the DVD for consistency" or whatever.

That first line was meant to read: "Hmm? Really? That sucks."

Hey, do you think it's safe to let my aged father loose to install this on his own, with me halfway around the world and unable to keep an eye on him? I've read some things about the firewall being wonky and that Leopard unistalls some software (I'm pretty sure I put some APE widgets on my parents' machine, though I haven't looked at it in so long I can't remember) and it has me worried.

The upgrade option worked just fine, but I use that as a test machine, so there's nothing on it I care about. All my widgets were present and working just fine. I wish I knew how to save them, as some of the ones I really liked are no longer available.

If you really are worried, there's no pressing need to upgrade today. Tiger is still being actively maintained for now.

Definitely remove APEness before upgrading!

Leopard would make it easier for you to provide support by using the screen-sharing.

Screen-sharing: except that I would have to upgrade, too, and I'm a dedicated late adopter and happy with how everything's working now. Really, I would just like him to stop being distracted by the shiny and install skype already.

Thanks to both of you for the comments.
