Since I'm bored waiting on this compile to finish, I thought I'd share.

So, would you be happy with one of the suburbian pizza places Type 1B (1A don't serve alcohol), or would you prefer to walk to the more stylish places twenty minutes away?

...and the reason I ask is because I don't go out in town. Unless, of course, there's a bar meet with any of the fan groups.

So whatcha compiling? I'm waiting on the 2.6.8.1 kernel to finish...

[identity profile] jsbowden.livejournal.com 2004-10-07 09:07 am (UTC)(link)
FreeBSD 5.3-BETA#7

All of it.

I was running -CURRENT, but the things I needed to support the hardware in my laptop will be part of 5.3-RELEASE so I'm not totally out on the bleeding edge anymore. It's also done. Doing a complete buildworld/installworld and buildkernel/installkernel takes about an hour.

Just curious, why FreeBSD over other Unix distros?

I ended up having to compile 2.6.9-rc3 to support the Dell PowerEdge 1850/2850. I can't believe I'm going to put a -rc kernel into production. Not like I have any choice in the matter though.

I've been running FreeBSD since 95 and it does what I want so there's no point in changing. I like the single unified OS vs. the kernel + random bits put together into distro model as well. It looks like I'm going to have to spend a week getting RatHed training instead of going to LISA, which blows, so I won't be in Atlanta after all.

WTF, a week for RH training? Are you going to be a RHCE or something? Fuck, I bet you could teach that class minus the RedHatisms like rpm and their marketing crap.

For normal day to day type use, I can deal with RH easily enough. The problem is using it in classified environments. There are a lot of things we have to track and deal with way outside the the norm. I'd rather attend LISA, but this is more relevant to my day to day job, and I may well end up with their silly cert.
