I think school vouchers are awesome, because they simultaneously stick it to rich people by devaluing their property tax payments into the school system while sticking it to poor kids by letting them surround themselves with other kids whose possession of stuff the poor kids will never have is matched only by the disdain with which they are confronted. Suck it, $PERSONS!
(That's how school vouchers work, right? I've never had much reason to be interested in this aspect of politics.)
School vouchers are essentially a distraction, an easy way for the rich to avoid the failure that is our public school system right now while allowing a very select few the chance to get into a non-failing school in their area. IF there's a private school near them. IF it's accepting new students. IF the voucher will cover the cost of tuition, or they'll offer a scholarship.
It's a money drain from public schools, which I repeat are failing, and a distraction from the actual problem. I think that until we actually fix the public school system (and nobody's really even tried other than on local scales at this point), I'll be against school vouchers. Once it's back to providing a good basic level of education, and the federal government (or individual state governments) has the money to throw at private schools, then yeah, sure.
