So, NASA once again finds itself in the position of having a working shuttle. Too bad really, the only way congress is ever going to approve the necessary funding to replace the goddamned things is if they self destruct.
Forty year old design, thirty year old construction, and expensive as fuck to run. Can we get rid of the goddamned things yet and get a modern space program going? The Apollo program was spinning off technology for a good 25 years, boosting our economy and raising the standard of living in the process, and generally giving people a good feeling about where we were headed. The shuttles are a drain. Expensive to run, passable PR, and too limited for our current needs. We should be using Delta IVs for heavy lifting (well, I'd like to see the return of the Saturn V; the most reliable and best performing rocket ever built) and small agile craft for moving people around.
Really, I've just found that I don't give a shit about NASA anymore. They've been so badly fucked by having their budget raped, and seen a huge brain drain as a side effect, that it's unlikely they'll ever recover without some significant change.
Shrub talks about going back to the moon and to Mars, but Congress controls the purse strings, and they're too busy stripping us of our rights to care about little things like human progress and exploration.
