This is Evolution Schmevolution week on The Daily Show, and last night they went for a panel form instead of a single guest. To paraphrase Stewart, because I can't remember his exact phrasing: "Were taking the path of making shit up as we go along, because it's worked so well for us, to a new panel format tonight." They had a guy who is a real scientist, a creationist, and a new age flake as their panel. It was fucking awesome.

I should be in bed right now, but I can't sleep, so what the hell, I'll post an update.

I sparred Master Lightfoot tonight. I'm glad it was him that kicked me; he was able to pull it enough and collapse on the floor instead of putting his foot through my chest. Note to self, leaping back fists are a bad idea against a Fourth Dan (candidate for Fifth) whose also a ranked K1 Kickboxer. In mid-air, you have no control, and jumping into a side kick is highly NOT recommended. I have full range of motion, and I can breathe okay, so I didn't bruise or crack any ribs, but I'm gonna be sore for a day or two. I never concern myself when sparring any of the Black belts; not one has ever hit me hard enough to do more than a minor bruise, and those were normally me screwing up and moving in to a technique they had already started to throw. On the plus side, I actually managed to hit him a few times, which I've never done before. Sparring with one of the Second Dans later I wasn't totally dominated (point of fact, I was pretty close to holding my own, which a mere 8 months ago I had no hope of) and I can outspar the vast majority of the Brown and lower belts. I did a two minute round with one of the Blue belts, and didn't get hit once.

I'm not sure how this happened; I really don't go to sparring classes because I enjoy them. I don't. I do the sparring because TKD is a MARTIAL art, and being proficient is required for Black belt. Being wrapped in foam rubber sparring gear for an hour and moving continuously is also awesome for continuing my assault on my weight and increasing my stamina. I do spar to the best of my ability. I may not like it, but doing anything less wouldn't be acceptable to me as a potential Black belt candidate, and I know Master Lightfoot notice would say it's not acceptable to him either. My primary reasons for doing TKD are health related and because it gives me something I can do with Evan, but knowing I can be physical if it ever came down to it is a nice feeling. If we both manage to pass our tests for Black in February, that will seriously be the fucking coolest.

I came home, took a long shower, and drank a beer. It's after midnight, the soreness has settled into something dull and background, so I think I'll try and maybe get to sleep.
