Every day I am more and more impressed. It wanted to update the MSN Messenger client a few weeks back, so I agreed and it happened. Since then, it has claimed to be logging in. It never actually successfully manages it, and neither does it EVER time out (seriously, my laptop has been running continuously for 11 days now, and it's been "Signing In" the entire time).

How hard IS it to write an IM client? Apparently, for everyone but MS, it's not terribly difficult.

It's not, apparently, even all that hard to write a client that will work with the MSN protocol, without actually knowing anything about that protocol except what you reverse engineer.

No, I took the machine home (I normally do, I don't remember why I didn't over the previous weekend) and fired it up to verify that backups had run and it managed to sign in.

It also signed in okay this morning when I plopped the machine in to the dock.

I don't know what it was doing before. I probably don't want to.
