So, I ordered a new laptop for work yesterday.

Dell Latitude D820 to replace my four year old D800.

    2.33Ghz Core2 Duo

    2GB DDR2-667 RAM (2x1GB DIMMs)

    15.4" 1920x1200 WUXGA LCD

    512MB NVIDIA® Quadro NVS 120M TurboCache™

    80GB 7200 RPM HDD

    8X DVD+/-RW

Dell Wireless™ 1390 802.11g Mini Card (aka Broadcom 57xx chipset)

    9 Cell Primary Battery

And why am I overspeccing the hell out of this laptop, you may ask?

Genuine Windows Vista™ Ultimate, with media

Do I want Vista? Not terribly, but want to or not, I'll be supporting it soon enough, so I'm inflicting it upon myself. I thought about upping the drive to 120GB so I could run an XP partition alongside the Vista and FreeBSD partitions, but then I'd probably not force myself to USE Vista.

I couldn't decide which icon to use, since the hardware is just Dead. Fucking. Sexy.

But I'll be running Vista, so you can see what was going on in my head after all...

Oh, no no no not the Vista!

Hmm, I had heard it as "Kumula kumula kumula vista" (not -lada -lada -lada). Regional diff, I guess?

Since you suggested it ... Google gives one result for koomalada vista, and 9,160 results for kumula vista. Happy to look at something more authoritative than the sources they cite.

Also, you may be interested in [livejournal.com profile] nagsheadlocal's entry this morning re the federal Dept of Transportation putting a halt to any/all upgrades to Windows Vista/IE 7/Office 2007 for a number of reasons including the cost and the lack of compatibility with third-party software

Not sniping at you, I understand having to take it on to support folks (my boss thinks we'll be upgrading sooner or later ... and he's looking forward to it, he seems to be embracing their DRM as a necessary anti-organized-crime measure ...?).

I will wait for the traditional third patch before I dare to obtain Vista. Nice-looking system, though. As a control, it's pointless, since it's so jacked up.

Completely unrelated: Your user icon rocks. I look forward to your posts sometimes for the sole reason that I might get to see it.

Why, thank you sir!

You'll be happy to know I shamelessly stole it from [livejournal.com profile] rimrunner.

As far as this system goes, I'm not evaluating performance, so much as learning how and where various controls have gone and what we'll need to adjust once we can no longer get XP OEM and have to start integrating Vista in to our AD domain. And I'll have users who will expect me to be able to answer questions.
