And I'm not talking about telemarketers.

So, yesterday morning I wasn't feeling all that great, so I stayed home from work (and why not, I earn 80 hours a year of sick time, and I have almost a week's worth just sitting there not doing anything for me).

Just as I was starting to prepare something to eat and take my meds, my phone goes off.

It's [livejournal.com profile] robeli. "You have to come to school. Now. Evan fell off the playground thing. They've called an ambulance."

My wording might be slightly off, but that's all of the conversation I remember. I'm just glad I was at home. I got dressed, and 6 minutes later (it would have been less, but that time of morning is still the late middle of morning rush and I had to sit through a light at one point), I was parking in front of the school.

I went straight through the lobby to the playground without checking in at the office. I violated several FCPS policies by not stopping at the office and getting a visitor badge, but at the time, I really had no interest in even pretending to care.

On the playground, my eight year old is flat on his back with an EMT/paramedic hovering over him and checking him out. He's at the bottom of this spiral climby thing (roughly 1ft. diameter, 8ft. tall). He'd apparently fallen off the platform that was the access to this (~5.5 - 6 feet up), and hit it on the way down. He can move all his limbs, and he's lucid, but he can't remember from one moment to the next whether or not he hit his head (it goes back and forth from yes to no several times) but it hurts, and his back hurts (his teacher saw him fall, and his back is what hit the climby thing). He's not talking, and he's laying very still. If you've met my kid, you understand exactly WHY this is extremely worrisome. They put a collar on him, moved him on to a board, and strapped him down. If I never have to see that ever again, it still will have been too many times.

After the X-rays were taken, we're told he's got nothing broken (but he does have a very deep contusion). They took a urine sample just to make sure there's no kidney damage. He's stiff and sore, but over all, he's OK. Bending over hurts, and he needed help getting up and out of the tub, but in a couple days he should be back to normal. Adults break; kids bounce (mostly, it could have easily gone a lot worse).

My fingers are bleeding from where I peeled the skin off around my nails. Aside from having been on fire, that might have been the scariest thing I've had to endure.

Oh.

I am glad that nothing is broken, that he is OK. I can only imagine how scary that must have been. Dear heavens.

Hope he feels better soon.

That is scary. Good to hear he's not seriously injured, and hope he's 100% soon.

I attribute his excellent flexibility and etc to not being more damaged to TKD.
That said, the fact he didn't bounce back was another big worry - he just got 1st place in a sparring tournament - he knows how to take the hits and kicks and keep going.

Yeah but he didn't know that was coming... at least from what I remember as a kid, the ones I never saw coming always seemed to actually hurt. But that may not be true for him, of course.

It's not so much about having seen it coming as it is being flexible enough to bend when he hit the rigid spiral metal, versus breaking. It still hurt, but it didn't lead to permanent injury.

Gah! Luckily, kids are tough. They checked his head too, right? No concussions or whatnot?

From: [identity profile] robeli.livejournal.com

No - they were checking his pupils frequently - they did what they were supposed to each time a light was shined in. No nasuea, dizzy, etc. No concussion luckily.

Oh shitz! I'm so glad he's OK.

It's a funny thing, to have to stuff your heart back after it jumps into your mouth when you hear news like that.

Oh dear goddess.

I am so glad he's relatively ok. You know the drill--keep an eye on him for wonky behavior/new pain for the next few days, etc. The kids and I are sending our love for all of you.

Sorry the Kid had such a hard fall, glad it will be Ok overall. Pass along my "get well soon". The ability of kids to bounce is pretty amazing. When I was a littly younger than he is now, I jumped off a neighbors roof, or something like that, and landed in the hospital with my leg under the x-ray machine. Funny, the thing I remember about it is that somehow I got a cake out of the deal. So, my suggestion would be, get him a cake.

Had someone attempted to send you to the office for a visitor badge, I would have wanted video of your reaction to that. Or at least a transcript.

Funny - he had helped himself to a huge piece and was eating yesterday afternoon while watching a movie :)

Add my "glad he's mostly okay"s to the list!

That's terrifying. Add another glad he's ok to the list.

I'm glad that he's doing better. Nobody needs to go through that.

The office knew you were coming and they also know you - they weren't about to stop you for protocols - even they know when to enforce the rules and when not too.
Evan is doing ok here today. Had a blast showing the xrays (it worked on the school computer), hospital bracelet and pusle thingy. At lunch time he told me he is sore, but ok. And a teacher thought they saw him climbing a tree (but could have been a different kid). So he's back to himself. We'll have to remind him to take it easy and just cuz he's ok from a 6 foot fall doesn't mean he can go looking for others while he's mending.
BTW - you did great yesterday - Evan didn't notice any of the worry on our faces. We hid it well :)

Wow -- that was pretty scary to read, I can only imagine what it was like to experience it.

...you were once on fire?!

questionable head bump explanation

Aspeger's moment kicked in with the 'did you hit your head' question. He bumped his head with Ben, they bumped into eachother, which is what made him lose his balance, unfortunately next to the opening. His teacher saw the entire fall. When he was asked did he hit his head - no - he didn't. Did his head hurt - yes, because he bumped it, not hit it. Total Asperger moment. That's why we kept getting conficting answers. His teacher saw what happened and explained to me after we got back to school which now makes sense to his seeming confusion.

very glad to hear that no serious damage was done.

Holy shit! Having been the, uh, cause of that sort of call once or twice (less minor than possible head/back injuries though), I can say it's not fun for him either!

Very glad he'll be okay.

OMG.

Dude, glad he's OK, and that no lasting harm was done to him.

From: [identity profile] mdevnich.livejournal.com

That's scary. Glad he's going to be okay.

From: [identity profile] mcswan.livejournal.com

Ditto on the concern and the relief that he seems to be out of the woods.

Seeing paramedics surround your child sure makes you realize what *really* matters in this life.

Hang in there.

From: [identity profile] lightinchains.livejournal.com

I don't have kids so I can't imagine what you've been through. I would like to mention that I and everyone else in my generation fell off a climbing frame 2 or 3 times. We learnt a valuable lesson about not falling off.

Glad to hear there's no serious damage.
