From an IRC exchange:

< MGP> First Program in FORTRAN Runs (1954) today in history
> And that program is probably still running somewhere today

I know this probably makes me broken or something, but I have a fondness for Fortran. It was the first real (read: compiled) language I learned. I've completely forgotten it in the last 17 years. I still remember when I took a C++ based class. I was in horror. Operators should NEVER be overloaded. But that's a rant for another day. Today is Fortran's day.

Fortran is very fast...

...when used in the right kind of application, namely one using a lot of arrays in calculations. All array indexes can be calculated directly by the runtime, instead of following chains of links as in C++, Basic and so forth.

I worked on several applications where Visual Basic was used to build the Windows user interface, and a Fortran runtime package did the number crunching. Sweet...

"Operators should NEVER be overloaded."

Yeah, a stupid idea that has gotten even stupider with time, as people realize how difficult it makes the code to understand.
