Um...

I consorted with the devil^W^Wa telco this evening.

As of Feb. 21, I'll have Verizon service in the house for the first time in years. FiOS, even. It'll be cheaper than Cox for the same level of service, considerably faster, and it'll roll my VZW service in with my FiOS, FiOS TV, and land line.

I feel so dirty.

They are giving me a free wireless router (shit I wouldn't let my dog, if I had one, route through), and a free 19" HDTV, which I'm also sure is bottom end crap. I don't really care about the hardware. I'd like the symmetrical 15/15 FiOS service, but it wasn't worth an extra $40/mo. to me. 15/2 should be perfectly livable. I don't do P2P, so outgoing is email, occasional picture uploads, and MMORPGs. Oh yes...and the occasional VPN tunnel to work, but seeing as how the office only has a T1, 2mb is still more than I need.

I've got that (well, 15/5), and it's delicious. So delicious that even though the new employers would pay for my cable, I'm probably not going to switch.

FIOS not available in my town yet. Good for you, though.

Isn't it interesting how perspectives change? "Only" a T1...

Says the man who lives where at least half the country is wired for 100mbit ethernet.

The sad part is, we could have more bandwidth at the office, but for the most part our T1 is adequate, and getting 10mbit or more with the same kind of SLA we get on our T1 is crazy expensive.

I could easily have stayed with Cox and been happy, but I like the very idea of fiber coming in to the house.

If I lived where you lived (you're in Comcast hell, yes?), I wouldn't have waited several months and I'd have paid extra for less to not have to deal with them.

I don't think 15/5 is an offering here. The next step up was fully synchronous, which, again, would be awesome...but not for $40 more monthly. I just don't need it.

FiOS = /drool. Maybe 2009 AT&T will have their shit together in Atlanta now that BellSouth has been assimilated.

What MMOs do you play? I went cold turkey on WoW in May. I've been counting the months since like a recovering alcoholic ("It's been 8 months since I've logged in...").

I'm a casual City of Heroes/City of Villains MMOer.

WoW didn't grab me only because I'm tired of the whole medievalish fantasy setting. You build an MMORPG out of something like Shadowrun, and I'd be all over it. I'd love a modern Urban Fantasy setting with cool tech and magic. CoH/CoV is the closest thing out there currently, and they routinely add new content to keep it fresh (the level cap has not moved since release, which is nice...the new content is appropriate teen toons and up).

Including the flat I live in! (And I think we pay around $15/month for it.)

You do understand that this is why we hate you. It's all jealousy.

That's way too upscale...more like the local planetarium!

Oh no! We're going to have to replace our 100 Mbit/s fiber network (230 SEK/month) with a 24/1 DSL connection (350 SEK/month) when we're moving!
