TKD was good last night. Got my forms stripe, and I am eligible for graduating to novice black belt this month. The thing is, Evan isn't. I don't know if going up before him would motivate him to push for it harder, or have the opposite effect. Ah, the joys of parenthood. I want the little guy to keep going.
Achieving Black belt in any art is something to be proud of, and being able to do it at 7 years old would just be awesome. He'd be one of three kids in the school to have achieved it that young. Being 6 and a brown belt is still a very cool achievement, and I'm proud of him, but I still want to test for Black together. Got to find a way to motivate him a little more. He's still having fun with TKD for the most part, and I don't want to squash that in the process. Yes, it's work, and sometimes he'll argue about going to class or practicing, but he's always glad he went to class (and once there, he'll usually ask to take the lower belt class that follows his, he just doesn't want to quit doing whatever it is he's involved in some days to go to class).
He should definately go up to novice black next month, he's just about got his form down, but do I wait? It wouldn't affect our testing for Black together, since if he didn't make the February 2006 list I'd push my testing back to June 2006. That would put me in novice black for 11 months, but the extra time wouldn't hurt me; you can never spend too much time working on getting your basics and forms correct.
I never imagined when we signed him up for a TKD intro class back in April of 2003 that he'd get this far. That I'd start six weeks later and wasn't something I'd even considered; it just sort of happened. We could both be Black belts come February of next year. June at the latest. That'd be awesome.
