The reason I bring it up is that I'd like all my readers to imagine there's no heaven...uh, wait, let's try this again. Imagine you don't have the use (or only have very limited use) of your thumbs..
For me, this isn't a thought experiment. I was holding a board for another student last night, and his placement was perfect along the vertical, but along the horizontal, he only caught the edge of the board. When the torque being exerted exceeded my ability to contain it, the board started rotating in my hands. My thumbs, they are fine as long as don't actually TRY TO USE THEM. I have full range of motion, but if I try and apply any pressure, the metacarpals on both start screaming in pain.
Try and get dressed without the use of your thumbs.
