So, despite my objections, I went ahead and left voicemail yesterday. I figured it was summarily deleted, since I hadn't heard anything back (and the message said "I'm in the office, but either on the phone or away from my desk, leave a message and I call you back").

I just got a call. I tell you, this is a sign.

It's a sign that I have an appointment for next Tuesday at 2:40PM.
