Ahoy me maties!
I saw
rimrunner reading on the Metro, so I had to check it out...
This is a list of the 50 most significant science fiction/fantasy novels, 1953-2002, according to the Science Fiction Book Club. Bold the ones you've read, strike-out the ones you hated, italicize those you started but never finished and put an asterisk beside the ones you loved.
( I don't particularly think they're choices are all that, but I'll run through 'em anyway )
I'm shocked at how many of the people I've seen run through this haven't read On the Beach. This was assigned reading for us in high school (and one of the better assignments, right up there with The Grapes of Wrath).
I've never attempted any of the Heinlein they list, and what little of his I did read long ago just didn't work for me. I've read some short stories by Bester, Cordwainer Smith, PKD, Philip Jose Farmer, and Asimov (and why the fuck isn't I, Robot on that list, or is it part of Foundation? If so, that one should be italicized, but I read it when I was...12?). I keep meaning to read their longer works.
Ack, I forgot to comment on Niven, so a quick edit. I've read some of the Man Kzin wars, and The Integral Trees, which ended any interest I had in the Ringworld books. I liked Footfall, but that was a collaboration with Pournelle (and why isn't HE on that list anywhere?)
And what abou Lem? Like I said in the cut text. Their list, it lacks.
Rendezvous With Rama is a great book. Don't bother reading any of the sequels.
I love this song. This whole disc is great for that matter. I need more Dead Can Dance.
