In which I attempt second degree. The closer it gets, the more I feel like whether or not I pass is going to randomly depend on how bad I happen to hurt.

There are three steps I have to make through: the prep class, which is where Master L evaluates us and determines if he thinks we're ready, the pre-exam, which is for all practical purposes the same as the final, comes next, and lastly, we take the final in front of the panel.

That's three chances for my body to totally screw me. Considering how much my right hip bothers me currently (pretty much always), I'm not sure I'm going to make it. I keep thinking I have endurance problems, and I do, but I've realized that I tend to stop breathing due to pain when I'm pushing myself. This of course leaves me a gasping wreck just trying not to pass out. So, my endurance isn't as bad as I think it is in all probability, if I can remember to force myself to breathe. Not being able to position my body properly also causes balance problems. Unfortunately, proper technique usually requires putting myself in a position where it hurts the most. Low stances, kicking with the right leg, or having it bear weight while kicking with the left leg? All are painful.

I hate this. I really enjoy TKD, and the health benefits over all have been great for me, but my hip is starting to piss me off. A lot.

Get a robot hip. Sure, it will screw you when the revolution comes but, in the meantime, you'll have bones of steel!

Steel? Too heavy. Give me bones of a nice composite material. Stronger, lighter, and more flexible.

Yeah. It should be about skill, but really, it's going to come down to whether my hip wants to perform on any given day.

Working with your own limitations is definitely a skill. But regardless I hope you have a good joint day.

Tell me about it. Chronic hip pain is the main reason that I haven't gone back into kickboxing yet. I've started doing yoga, in the hopes that it loosens up a bit, but I'm starting to worry that I've done too much damage to my left hip flexor to recover.

Unless you've separated it from the bone, your flexor should eventually be okay I'd think. I'm thinking it's time to maybe go back to the ortho and see what's up. I know I've got a couple of bone chips in that area...I have to wonder if they've migrated.

There's just so much scar tissue there, probably more scar tissue than muscle by now, since I've pulled/torn it so many times.

I should probably go to a physio and see if there's anything that I can do for it. Everything I've tried so far just seems to aggravate it more.

Sure!

More seriously, I already alternate between ibuprofen, acetaminophen, or a mixture of the two on days I take class. Some days are better than others, and it bears no relation to which drug (or combination) I use.

maybe another cortizone shot to get you through? Last one lasted about 6 weeks, right?

My left hip is starting to bother me a lot too. It is quite frustrating.

As far as your breathing goes... I still think you should go to the doctor's and get checked for asthma.
