So I was checking out http://www.electoral-vote.com/ and oh my are they getting slammed right about now.

Tomorrow's going to be fun to watch. I'll vote on my way out to work in the AM, and then I'll just sit back and enjoy the fireworks.

See, I don't really care who wins. I have a preference, but he's not actually running, so I'll vote, but I live in a Red state and it doesn't actually matter. I could vote for Cthulhu and not have an effect on the outcome. It's very liberating. We have a few local bits to vote on, but that's just status quo, every year is a voting year in VA. It's either Pres./Senate, House, Senate, or House, plus all the local and state level elections thrown in for fun each year.

I said this in someone else's journal, but I feel the need to say it again here:

To all you fuckheads who are whining about moving if the wrong candidate (from your perspective) wins: Get some fucking perspective. We may be a little fucked up now, but we'll be just fine soon enough.

Feeling repressed from the Right? I have Joe McCarthy on the line for you...something about an Activity Committee?

Or perhaps the Left? Roosevelt would like to ask you about some USSC Judges he's having issues with...

Think our two party system is problematic? I dare you to look at the shambles that are the parliamentary systems elsewhere that don't have the marginalizing effect on their outlying idiots that our winner take all system does and not run away screaming.

The biggest change I'd make to our current system is to resurrect Federalism and give the Senate back to the States' Legislatures. And I'd do it tomorrow. That's what I want to see. If you honestly believe the States having lost their voice in Congress is a good thing, you haven't been paying attention for the last 80 years.

It's like I said to Erik last night: I may think that Kerry's a shmuck and Bush is an idiot, but I also think that our system works pretty well. We've managed to keep it going for 200 years, and the more history I read, the more remarkable that accomplishment appears.

Not that it's perfect, not at all, but it could be so much worse. (Although that said, "It could be worse" is not a reason to not try to fix what's broken.)

Of course it could always be better. That'll never change no matter how good it is; it could always be worse too no matter how bad it is also.

I prefer throwing my vote towards those who look forward with an eye on the past for perspective, versus those who expect the future to be more of the same since they can't see past the history they're living in.

Blame the South, then, for linking slavery to State's Rights. And not just in the Civil War either, mind. The entirety of the 60's.

One thing that has been confusing me is how CLOSE Virginia has been. How is it possible that Bush is well within the margin of error in VA?

I pretty much refuse to believe it. I don't know who they're polling, but this is the home of Pat Roberston and Jerry Falwell. Outside of the 'Urban Crescent' of the I95/I64 corridor from Fairfax to Va. Beach (and even within a large swath of it), VA is a very conservative state, and somehow the Republicans are still selling themselves as conservative.

Maybe there's been a lot of migration from the Maryland DC suburbs to Alexandria/Tyson's Corner/Falls Church?

Northern VA is much more densely populated than the rest of the state, and has a liberal contingent. Plus, VA is so conservative, you have the ones that won't vote for Bush because he's not the right kind of conservative. They don't have a better choice, but some of them hate Bush with a passion.

Umm… maybe your definition of “shambles” differs from the one I’m familiar with. Or maybe you haven’t been exposed to parliamentary systems as much as you should have, to make this proclamation. Or maybe we live in different universes.
