So please, stop acting as though the world has ended. It hasn't.

Really.

No, I don't like Bush. I'd have happily voted for other Republican types (and have done so in the past, as well as voted for Democrats in the past as well). It's more of the same for the next four years, and probably only the next two. Hell, I can think of several Democrats I'd not have felt dirty voting for (and voting for Kerry was not pleasant).

Whenever either party gains control of both the Legislative and Executive branches they almost immediately start fucking up on a grand scale that insures they've angered the center to the point where they're going to find out that 3.5% isn't even close to a mandate.

Reagan had a mandate. He lost ONE state in 84, and took the popular vote by a huge margin. Bush barely won in real vote percentages. Bush is stupid enough to act like he's got a popular mandate and screw himself out of control of Congress in two years. Count on it. The Dems may suck at politicking for a President, but they seem to know their shit at the local and state levels. There will be balance. Once again, Congress and the President will have to actually think before randomly passing shit off as legislation. In the interim, things are gonna be a bit rocky. Get used to it.

The world may laugh at us. Let them laugh, right up to the point where they remember that this idiot has control over our nuclear (SAY IT MOTHERFUCKER: NEW. CLEAR.) arsenal. And our B2s. And our aircraft carriers. And all the other toys that make us that last ramaining superpower on the planet. If they're lucky, we'll wake up and remember this too.

He'll be gone in four years, and I keep hearing rumblings that the Republicans are Not Happy with Jesus Contingent that seems to have taken over their party. If they had lost, the schism would already have started. Expect to see the party splits happen after the mid terms.

If the Dems quit being stupid, they'll take this opportunity to come up with a coherent party platform and a real plan that doesn't sound like it was designed by a committee of Kindergarden teachers on Really Good Drugs. I'm all for looking to the future with hope and ideals, but you have to have a real plan for dealing with the world as it is that doesn't appear to be made up from whole cloth of the poll results of the day.

One thing Juniors handlers learned during the Reagan years and have put to highly effective use is this: Pick a message. Stick with it. No matter how dumb. Consistency boys and girls will win you the populace, even if it's stupid.

2008 should be interesting. I predict McCain v. Hildabeast.

In what way would that campaign be interesting?

McCain vs. Obama...that would be interesting.

No, that would suck because they are both worthy candidates. Pair them off against opponents who suck to make the goodness last.

(Man, LiveJournal needs a comment editor...)

It's definately stupid to quit fighting. And it doesn't really matter whether the reason one stops fighting is because one thinks everything is going to be okay or because one gives up.

Just four more years?

What makes you think that Bozo the President won't have a go at repealing the 22nd Amendment?

Re: Just four more years?

He can *try*. If we can't even muster more than 25% of the Congress -- or more than 25% of the states -- to stop him, then we deserve it.

I remember the Reagan mandate....

I worked really, really hard for Mondale/Ferraro in '84. When they lost, there was despair. We were sure that nothing good would ever happen again. But the world didn't end. We kept on working, and things eventually got better. Like you said, balance happens.

Therein lies the crux, mon ami. If they're lucky, we'll wake up and remember this too. What if the world thinks that we won't wake up and remember this too? I mean, who really gives a shit if the rest of the world laughs? Unfortunately, the rest of the world is incredibly incredibly wary because they think that the US is an 800 pound gorilla that is armed with new. clear. weapons and has a history of arrogant pre-emption. Maybe there is the one retarded idiot terrorist who thinks they can take the gorilla out with a pea-shooter? We have millions of pounds of heavy arsenal. Thousands of B52. 100s of aircraft carriers. and all the toys etc. If the one peashooter the idiot has is new. clear., isn't that more than we can afford to lose?

It's just an election - but there's never been a winner with an almost messianic God-complex who is willing to fight based on his gut instinct. You make it sound like last year's Red Sox lost another playoff series and that the future would bring the BosSox fans something better. You're certainly right we should stop acting as if the world has ended. It has not. But this election result in many people's minds is a very real step in that direction.

What an odd view of history you have.

Touche. Serves me right for not placing that within the context of the nuclear-armed free world.
