So, the kiddo has been wanting an Xbox360 for a while. He's got quite a chunk of change in birthday money that he's never spent, so we used that to cover part of the cost. I picked up an Elite version for him yesterday. Yeah, it's a bit more expensive than the standard box (and the Arcade wasn't even an option), but it comes with Lego Indiana Jones and Kung Fu Panda along with all the other extras the Elite throws in the box over the standard configuration, so it was worth the extra dollars. The color also matches all our AV gear, which is a nice side benny.

So, I guess maybe I'll have to pick up whatever it is y'all play regularly and join in?

Once I get it networked. Which I haven't figured out how I'm going to do. I'm not about to spend the $100 Microsoft want for what's a $15 USB WiFi adapter under the injection molded plastic. I guess I'll have to run a cable to the second machine upstairs and bring the wireles bridge it's plugged into to the AV gear. That would get the PS2 on the network also. What I need is a four foot relay rack in the basement with a nice rj48 patch panel wired to dual or quad jacks in every room, and a gbit switch that I can cross connect any of them with (and hey, it makes phone lines easy too, since POTS runs over cat6 just as well as it does over cat3, and rj11/12 plugs into rj48 just fine). Of course, trying to retrofit that kind of wiring into the house would be expensive. But I'm pretty sure it'd also be worth it.

This here post be locked me hardys, as my kiddo can't see it that way.

I haven't posted in a few days, so a quick update.

The weather is wonderful, I've been driving around top down and loving every minute of it. Shame about those folks in the upper plains. The rivers should be subsiding though, and hopefully crop production issues should be localized to those discrete areas.

I'm still working my way through the DVD collection on the big screen. LoTR:FotR looked fantastic, Baraka was gorgeous, and the kiddo was watching SW:tPM the other day and it may be a bad movie, but damn it's pretty. Buckaroo Banzai and Big Trouble in Little China are as fun as ever, but even more awesome.

I need to call Verizon and get an HD box from them for that TV. Then just leave it on Discovery, Animal Planet, or National Geographic HD for a while and enjoy the view.

It's also tempting to drag my computer upstairs and see just how awesome Portal would look over HDMI on it.

Work is work. I like what I do in general, but sometimes, the actual details annoy the shit out of me.

The poor kiddo can't decide if he wants to be on summer break or not. As much as he wants to stay home and play, the break in routine is killing him.

It seems I turn the life counter up by one in two weeks.

Sitting at this desk in a dim office, when it's warm and sunny outside?

I just wanna hop in ye ole auto and drive around enjoying the day.

[livejournal.com profile] robeli's parents are here and they've got my niece today, so Evan stayed home from school and they all went to the zoo. Enjoying the beautiful day, I'm sure.

The office is pretty empty. I'm thinking I can skip out a bit early and no one will be the wiser.

The office is pretty empty. I'm thinking I can skip out a bit early and no one will be the wiser.
And I'm not talking about telemarketers.

So, yesterday morning I wasn't feeling all that great, so I stayed home from work (and why not, I earn 80 hours a year of sick time, and I have almost a week's worth just sitting there not doing anything for me).

Just as I was starting to prepare something to eat and take my meds, my phone goes off.

It's [livejournal.com profile] robeli. "You have to come to school. Now. Evan fell off the playground thing. They've called an ambulance."

My wording might be slightly off, but that's all of the conversation I remember. I'm just glad I was at home. I got dressed, and 6 minutes later (it would have been less, but that time of morning is still the late middle of morning rush and I had to sit through a light at one point), I was parking in front of the school.

I went straight through the lobby to the playground without checking in at the office. I violated several FCPS policies by not stopping at the office and getting a visitor badge, but at the time, I really had no interest in even pretending to care.

On the playground, my eight year old is flat on his back with an EMT/paramedic hovering over him and checking him out. He's at the bottom of this spiral climby thing (roughly 1ft. diameter, 8ft. tall). He'd apparently fallen off the platform that was the access to this (~5.5 - 6 feet up), and hit it on the way down. He can move all his limbs, and he's lucid, but he can't remember from one moment to the next whether or not he hit his head (it goes back and forth from yes to no several times) but it hurts, and his back hurts (his teacher saw him fall, and his back is what hit the climby thing). He's not talking, and he's laying very still. If you've met my kid, you understand exactly WHY this is extremely worrisome. They put a collar on him, moved him on to a board, and strapped him down. If I never have to see that ever again, it still will have been too many times.

After the X-rays were taken, we're told he's got nothing broken (but he does have a very deep contusion). They took a urine sample just to make sure there's no kidney damage. He's stiff and sore, but over all, he's OK. Bending over hurts, and he needed help getting up and out of the tub, but in a couple days he should be back to normal. Adults break; kids bounce (mostly, it could have easily gone a lot worse).

My fingers are bleeding from where I peeled the skin off around my nails. Aside from having been on fire, that might have been the scariest thing I've had to endure.

To Cabo Wabo I did not go go,

To Ft. Lauderdale I did fail,

Where in the sand did I in fact land?

At the big giant house of the animated mouse.

At Coronado Springs we did keep our things,

Every day we went out to play,

and during the nights we gawked at the lights.

Oh did we eat, every meal was a treat,

And to get cool we spent time in the pool.

The Test Track was fun, I tell every one,

As was the Mansion of Haunt to which we did jaunt,

Thunder Mountain so Big, I totally dig,

In Splash Mountain did we get ever so wet,

Expedition Everest was just the absolute best,

Leave Kilimanjaro, we did with great sorrow

In the Caribbean, Pirates we were seein';

Our trip with Star Wars took many detours,

On the Primeval Whirl we didst go for a twirl,

And then there was the Lightyear with Buzz,

The Tower of Terror was truly a scarer,

The Rock N' Roller Coaster Aer-o-smith did hoster,

The Swiss Family did live in a big tree,

And without booze we took the Jungle Cruise.

At the end of our roam we did find ourselves home,

And now it's time for the end of my rhyme.
