I had a lot of fun this weekend. I'd just like to thank [livejournal.com profile] publius1 for throwing his little shindig and let him know that [livejournal.com profile] robeli disputes his comment made while walking to get breakfast on Sunday.

It was good to see every one who made it. Some of you I haven't seen in a long time, others I hadn't met IRL previously at all. [livejournal.com profile] desdenova had previous plans, and couldn't join us unfortunately and [livejournal.com profile] dilickjm and his lovely wife [livejournal.com profile] hennyanya had to cancel, so I've yet to make their acquaintance. Another time then.

[livejournal.com profile] missysedai deviled some eggs and grilled some burgers. I think there might have been other food as well, but really, what else is necessary after that?

There may have been cake. Ice cream was possibly in attendance.

Much Guitar Hero [1|2] was played, and when people weren't being Rock Gods, Demigods, Heroes, or at least wannabes, they were being Gods of War. [livejournal.com profile] publius1's PS2 (Sony, not IBM) may never recover from the carnage.

[livejournal.com profile] melallen, [livejournal.com profile] pokeypenguin, [livejournal.com profile] aor, and I played a lot of 9 ball, 8 ball, team 8 ball, and cut throat. [livejournal.com profile] scifantasy made the occasional foray over to the table as well, and I saw [livejournal.com profile] montoya play at least once.

I'm positive some one, at some time over the course of the weekend, might have had a drink. Possibly two. I couldn't say with any surety.

Despite getting up before the sun yesterday, I still managed to miss my flight, but I made it on the next one standby, so it wasn't as bad as it could have been. It was a fitting cap to getting put on an earlier flight on Saturday, which then sat on the tarmac for almost two hours while ORD got sprinkled on. It's okay that you were still in zombie mode when I headed out Kenn. I wouldn't have been up either, except for that whole "I need to get to ORD by 8, and fuck, it's already twenty of 7" thing.

Just for the record, I got on a Brown line train at Wellington at 7:02 (I had to wait a bit, what with CTA being on a weekend/holiday schedule, and me getting up the stairs just as a train headed to the loop was leaving). I got off a Blue line train at ORD at 8:36. Google Earth informs me that this is a meager 16 miles by street. The El suffers from the same disease that makes the Metro a huge PITA. You can't get from anywhere to anywhere else without going to the center first (in DC, for fun, try to get from College Park to Silver Spring (6.6 driving miles) using the Metro).

[livejournal.com profile] robeli tells me that it would be easier (for me, and really, it's all about me) if you all came to my house.

The DC Metro was horrible for anyone who did not order their entire lives around it. I still had a crap car when I lived in DC and it got repaired quite a bit, often leaving me transportless for a few days.

It took me no more than 15 minutes to drive from A to B when I lived there, and that was in heavy traffic near the beltway. It took me over an hour, and two separate buses, to go the same distance on public transport. And people still had the nerve to be surprised that I hated that system, even after I told them. "But you could save so much gas money!" Not at the expense of two hours of my life every day to go four miles.

For what it's worth, Chicago is at least thinking of trying to do something about that-- there are continual vague mumblings about build a far suburban "Outer Loop" to complement the actual Loop, but I doubt it'll happen. This year, for instance, it is claimed we need a hundred million from the state just to keep the existing routes, services, and fees intact.

Glad you enjoyed yourself! And glad robeli is getting some use out of it.

Sure. When are you planning to invite us?

Just for possible future reference...

If you take the Belmont Bus (3 blocks north of the apartment) West a couple of miles you will run into the Belmont Blue Line stop... doing this would have saved you 45 minutes or so.

It was nice to meet you in person finally.

DC's closer to me than Chicago - and I'd get to meet more people in person - so when's your social?

From: [identity profile] scifantasy.livejournal.com

I'll help out. If nothing else, a Social at your place will need cars.

(And no, no, no, this was not a recommendation that we hold a Social at my place. As Jamie can attest it's much too small.)

Oh, I don't know, I think it'd be hilarious to try to squeeze that many of us into your apartment.

You know, like clowns...inna Volkswagen!

You could only come if you bring wife and child too - it would be soooo awesome to see all of you!!!!

Likewise. I might be in DC in November for CSI Computer Security Conference since I'm getting shafted going to Black Hat this year.

Zoom zoom...

As R states, you and Jenna and the kiddo are always welcome, though it'd be nice to get down to Atlanta at some point too. I'd like to see your shiny newish aquarium.

Re: Zoom zoom...

They had their 5th million visitor this week, so it's doing pretty well. I'm sure Evan would love it.
