I really can't figure out how anyone could possibly think that making a big stink out of the perceived/possibly intended insult was the proper way to spin it, anyway.

The only thing I can think of is that if the political parties of the principals were reversed, what we're seeing now would be nothing, and someone on the Republican side thought that making a stink would be the best way to expose that.

If that's what they thought, they were wrong. Dead wrong.

The idea presumably is that by ramping up the faux outrage right now they can both rally their own base and intimidate away any sort of future criticism of Palin.

The extent to which it will work is an open question.
