It's really odd to think of him as a star. The cognitive dissonance this inspires is just...

You need some back story.

There's a little university in Norfolk, VA called ODU. Across the street from the main campus there used to be a row of fine drinking establishments. Crazy Charlies, 4400, Elbow Room, and Batterson's. I may be forgetting one or two, but they aren't terribly relevant, especially since the university has bought up all that property over the last fifteen years and torn everything down and built more university.

The first time I ever saw Dave Matthews was live. In Batterson's. Across the street from ODU. There were maybe ten people total there, and he was just the musician of the night. Alone, with an acoustic guitar, on a three legged stool with a mic, amp, and speaker.

We were drinking, and were obnoxious as hell to the poor guy.

Around a year and a half later, What Would You Say became a hit, and everyone else outside of Blacksburg (VTech and just down I81 a few miles, Radford), Chalottesville (UVA), Richmond (VCU and UofR) and Norfolk (ODU, NSU, and CNU across the James)) came to know Dave Matthews.

But he'll always be this guy on the stool, you know?

seeing Dave early on

I'm envious . . .

A long time ago, back when the band was just starting to become popular, I had the chance to go backstage at a concert, but I declined because I didn't know who the heck they were. I'm still kicking myself, since now I'm one of their biggest fans . . .

BTW, also enjoyed the inauguration post below.

Re: seeing Dave early on

It's not like we had any idea...he really was just another guy who played the college scene around VA in the early nineties. If only we'd known, we might not have given him quite as much shit. No guarantees on that. He was good, we were just out having a good time (one of my wife's house mates was a bartender there, and it was quiet, unlike the other places which tended to be loud and packed).

I'm not sure how you found me, but hey, you're welcome to stay if you want, though I'm inconsistent and tend to rant or post silliness more than anything else.

"If only we'd known, we might not have given him quite as much shit."

Or at least gotten his autograph. . . ;-)

As for how I came across your post, if I told you, you'd laugh. The wonders of the internet.

I'll check back every now and then. I prefer ranting and silliness to dry, organized posts.

I still think steak night was better than Dave Matthews night :)
