Okay, so the CRT on my desk at work has been degrading rapidly of late. Everything's been ghosting about 1/4" to the left, which was no fun to stare at for eight hours a day. In fact, it was pretty goddamned annoying, and was giving me a headache. The monitor is a high end SGI rebranded Sony 22", and five years is a short life for those. I've got pretty much identical others several years older, but thermodynamics happens even to the best of hardware.

So, we as a company decided we'll no longer be buying CRTs as of the middle of last year. Personally, I hate LCDs. I can see the fucking pixel grid, and staring at the washed out colors just don't make me a happy little camper, but I'll be the good little corporate drone and go with the flow.

My replacement showed up yesterday. It was supposed to match the built in LCD's resolution (I don't think this is asking much, since Windows is very picky about dekstop sizes, and really hates when your resolution goes and gets all changey. The replacement is a Dell 2005FPW. This is the wide aspect ratio sibling to the 2005FP. The 2005FP is the exact same height, physically, and does 1600x1200. This isn't bad, since most desktop flatpanels at any size max out at 1280x1024, which fucking blows as a resolution on anything larger than 15". This fucking thing only does 1680x1050. I ran the CRT at 1600x1200, though it was capable of 1920x1440@100hz. Windows could handle losing the horizontal res, it just moved the windows to the left when opening them initially at the lower res. Why the fuck is it so goddamned hard to just add the extra 300 pixels horizontally? I LOST 150 pixels vertically, totally fucking up my window sizing and placement between docked and undocked, and I have larger fucking pixels than the equivalent 4:3 aspect LCD that costs less. Who the fuck do I have to kill to get some goddamned sanity in any area of how anything is done on this goddamned planet?

I. Do. Not. Need. This. Fucking. Irritation.

All I want, and this isn't fucking hard, is for my goddamned docked and undocked resolutions to fucking match. This isn't asking for much. The built in panel on the laptop is only 15.4", the desktop panel is 20.1". Why the fuck can't I get as many pixels in a LARGER FUCKING SCREEN? It's okay though, the more irritated I am by my surroundings, the larger an asshole I turn into, so at least my coworkers have something to look forward to.

I'm going to send this fucking thing back, and get a real piece of glass back on my desk. Or if my corporate masters insist on inflicting this LCD shit on me, I'll just order a 2005FP. Personally, I prefer glass. It's half the cost, twice the performance, has better color, and doesn't take up any more desktop footprint than the docking station it's sitting on.

How the hell do those of you who've been stuck on LCDs for any length of time handle this? I keep finding myself focusing on the spaces between the pixels. This is worse than the ghosting on the CRT. And now my head hurts.
