Since my office is near the kitchen/break room, I overhear lots of random shit when I leave my door open.

Today, I got to overhear two of my coworkers discussing the upcoming election. Both are very Republican, so they weren't arguing or anything ,just discussing things from the right wingnut point of view.

The statement that just made want to punch a motherfucker in the nuts? It went like this:

"Obama's a god damned communist...look at his voting record. And he's more Muslim than Christian."

I'm sorry, but nothing in the Democrat party is remotely left enough to do more than dabble in minor socialism. And the stupid Muslim statement? I can't believe people are still spouting that shit.

If you want to vote for McCain, vote for McCain, but why is it necessary to demonize the left? Last time I checked, WWII, Korea, and Vietnam all started under Democrat rule, and they didn't capitulate or go handing the country over to the Soviets or the Chinese. Their Republican followers agreed to a stalemate or left the field to the enemy, respectively. If Nixon had won in 1960, it wouldn't shock me if there were missiles in Cuba.

If you want to report an anecdote, report an anecdote. Why is it necessary to demonize the right? ;)

I'm not demonizing, just pointing out that I don't see the right being any better or more competent than the left, and just as easily made fun of.

Oh I know, I'm just pulling your leg. I've heard a lot of outlandish hyperbole from both sides in this election. I look forward to learning whether next year we'll have a communist Iran-allied oligarchy under Obama or a fascist evangelical theocracy once Palin takes over when McCain dies from his top-secret terminal illnesses.

His cancer and swollen neck are top secret? I'm betting he'll die of stress in the first year if he wins, just due to age and known medical issues compounded.

My mom had a melanoma that was at least IIa um, twenty years ago. Should I call her up and make sure she knows she has a terminal illness?

From: [identity profile] jsbowden.livejournal.com

Life's a terminal illness. Is your mom 72 years old, running for president, and dealing with a failing economy, a war, and all the normal stuff that any president has to handle on a day to day basis?

I'll sign the hell up to that.

Although your right wingnuts seem to be better (or worse) than ours. The only person I know at work to throw the C-bomb is sort of acknowledged by one and all as a kook... because he thinks the Republicans are hard socialists.

Dude, I know you're joking, but don't go there because I know other people aren't.

(Yes, technically, but so far this looks like the S&L crisis about 20 years ago: Intervention and minimal nationalization to prevent an immediate liquidity crisis, followed by a more orderly fire sale of assets back into the market over the course of a few years, with the added benefit that the egregiously offending firms are ruthlessly destroyed. It ain't nothin' good; it's certainly a bad thing. But I'm not going to panic any more than I did in 1987.)

You know what the biggest difference between now and 87 is? I didn't have any money to BUY once the market bottomed out then, being all of 17. Now? All my stuff's been liquid for a while, and I'm looking forward to picking up some really nice buys at fire sale pricing Real Soon Now.

Insanely. If I hadn't just bought this house, I'd be in serious "Awww, yeah!" territory. But having a little opportunity in a down market is nice enough. As I was pointing out to [livejournal.com profile] anann73, "This is why you don't invest more than you can afford to lose."

You live in Matthews...somehow, I can't see the real estate there having been all that overvalued. It's...Matthews. You're practically on an island with no redeeming features with only one road in and out (sorry, I have to pick on Matthews, it's a Gloucester thing...somebody has to be worse than us...).

From: [identity profile] omarius.livejournal.com

Yeah, and I see the Gloucester schools didn't even bother to teach you to spell it (one "T"). And remember, most folks have to drive through Gloucester to get there, so it looks *really* attractive.

I live in Toano, though.

From: [identity profile] jsbowden.livejournal.com

I even knew that. I don't know why I spell it with two ts.

Toano's nice, and Williamsburg shouldn't be that bad on pricing. We were looking in that area when we were considering moving back to Hampton Roads from up here in hellNorthern VA, and pricing in that area wasn't that bad (although we were looking on the York Co. side, and Toano's James City Co. if memory serves).

Williamsburg is steep close to the college, and didn't have very many properties in my price range. Anyone looking for something in the 350+ range would find plenty to choose from, though. We ended up in Toano simply because it was the best house in my price range by far. Yep, Toano is in JCC.

There was a farm for sale in Guinea that I thought about for a moment...sure, it ain't as rough as it used to be, but naaah. Plus it was a bit far for a commute.

Sometimes people drive 5 or 6 miles below the speed limit! It's ridiculous! No fast, free flowing up the keenly-designed expressways like you have up there in NoVA.
